My First Experience On A Charter Boat |
|
|
by Nick Freimuth |
July 25, 2006 |
This past weekend I had an
opportunity to experience a chartered salmon fishing trip on the
Refuge with Captain Jay Herbst. Most charters are out fishing by
4:00 in the morning, but my adventure started at 5:00 a.m.
Joining me on the Refuge was Bruce Swanson, his son Justin,
Bruce's sister Gale, and family friend Dave. It was the first
charter experience for every one on the boat. After we took few
Dramamine pills to ensure our breakfast would stay down the
entire trip we headed out to Lake Michigan. Captain Jay keeps an
extremely clean boat and lets all passengers know that safety is
first. Hot and cold running water and a bathroom make the trip
even more relaxing. As far as what time trips usually take off,
Herbst said charters vary in departure time.

Some of the nicer things about being on a charter is
that all of the lines are set, the boat is prepared, and your
days catch is filleted for you once you get back to the shore.
My charter boat experience was a day before the Kewaunee/Door
County Salmon Tournament and Bruce Swanson reeled in a fish that
would have been worth a good deal of money in the tourney. The
26.3-pound catch was by far the biggest fish the Swanson family
has ever caught, and Jay said that usually happens with every
charter trip.

After five hours of fishing aboard the 32 foot Refuge
our day was complete with ten King Salmon and one Rainbow Trout.
We had a good deal of success on fly and dodger combination with
blue, green, and white working best for colors. In part two of
this series on charter fishing you will hear more about the
luxuries of charter fishing.

Charter Fishing Is A Blast |
|
|
by Nick Freimuth |
July 26, 2006 |
I recently had the opportunity to enjoy a day of fishing
aboard the Refuge with Captain Jay Herbst. In part one
of this series I talked about the experience, today you
will hear more about the luxuries of charter fishing.
Aboard the Refuge we were greeted with a fresh pot of
coffee and droughts. After departure Captain Jay offered
to let anyone drive the 32-foot boat, and also let
everyone know if they want to be involved in setting
lines or anything they were more than welcome. After six
or seven nice size King Salmon were in the cooler it was
time for lunch. The charter captain had lunch prepared
along with plenty of room inside for all six of us to
eat. Herbst said that while the luxuries of charter
fishing may be great that is not his number one goal.

When a customer has a fish on the line Captain Jay tells
the angler how to reel in their big catch so the fish
does not get away. On my charter boat experience 92%
percent of the fish that were hooked were brought into
the boat.
One of the customers aboard the charter I was on was a
female. It was Gale's first time on a charter and she
was not sure if she was going to be able to reel in one
of these huge fish. Gale was the last one to try reeling
in a catch and she did a tremendous job. After her
second fish she was a natural and said this was the most
exciting fishing experience in her life. Charter fishing
is made easy by the captain and does not discriminate.
Fishing on Lake Michigan has been spectacular this year.
Herbst said it seems that fish are bigger this year than
last.

While cleaning all of the day's catch Captain Jay gave
cooking tips too. From start to finish my first charter
boat experience was a lot of fun. I want to say thank
you to the Swanson family for allowing me to come along
on their trip. I would also like to thank Jay Herbst the
Captain of the Refuge for a great experience. After the
trip I recommend a chartered salmon fishing trip to
anyone who enjoys being outdoors.
